Rani of Jhansi was an Indian queen, well educated, who fought against the British during the mid-1800s'. Joan of Arc came from a peasant family, was illiterate, but she played an influential role in the French 100 years' war and fought against the English allies of France.
Lakshmibai (1828 - 1858) was the queen of Jhansi in North India. Rani of Jhansi, as she was popularly known, was one of the leaders of Indian rebellion against the British in 1857.
Having lost her mother when she was just 4, she studied from home. But she also learnt shooting, swordsmanship, horse riding and traditional gymnastics. She was very independent, right from her young years. Later after the death of her husband the Maharaja of Jhansi, she took control over the kingdom. She fought several wars against the British and was known to be a brave fighter and valiant leader. She was finally killed in the battle of Gwalior in 1858.
