Answer:

The students contributed with 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22.

Step-by-step explanation:

Once their contributions are consecutive numbers, let's say x,~ x+1, x+2,~ x+3 and x+4, and they sum up 100, we have the equation

x+(x+1)+(x+2)+(x+3)+(x+4) = 100 \\\\\Rightarrow 5x+10 = 100\\\\\Rightarrow 5x = 90\\\\\Rightarrow x = 18

Then they contributed with 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22.

To find:

The contribution by each student.

Solution:

Let us take the contribution of the five students be a, b, c, d, e.

Since the contributions are consecutive numbers, let a = x

Then b = x + 1, c = x + 2, d = x + 3 and e = x + 4

By the given condition, sum of the contributions of the five students = 100

Then a + b + c + d + e = 100

or, x + x + 1 + x + 2+ x + 3 + x + 4 = 100

or, (x + x + x + x + x) + (1 + 2 + 3 + 4) = 100

or, 5x + 10 = 100

or, 5x = 100 - 10

or, 5x = 90

or, x = 90 / 5

or, x = 18

So a = 18, b = 18 + 1 = 19, c = 18 + 2 = 20, d = 18 + 3 = 21 and e = 18 + 4 = 22

Therefore, the contribution of each is 18, 19, 20, 21, 22.
