Here's a fun fact: B.R. Ambedkar was the only person other than Karl Marx to have gone through the entire collection of books of the famous London Library.
He was the first graduate from the Mahar community and was one of the very few intellectually brilliant leaders of that time. While his contributions to the fight against the British are similar to the other intellectuals, it would be undermining his efforts if we don't look at his fight against the caste evils. To understand the contributions, one needs to understand the dire situation of the Mahar community A.K.A the Untouchables in the history. People who allowed their cattle to use the water, never even touched or in many cases didn't allow these communities have their share of water. Mr Ambedkar comes from this community and this was also one of the main reasons for his continuous fight against caste evils.
Before we go to his contributions in detail, with all due respect to our culture and traditions, history has been very unkind to some sects or communities right from their birth. They weren't allowed to share the food, shelter, amenities, education and in some cases their existence also depended on the whims and fancies of the other upper castes. Their moral was affected, self respect lost and in almost all cases their dignity undermined.Dr. Ambedkar's efforts gain unparalleled respect because he was able to question this centuries old discrimination in a way that appealed to both the intellectuals and the common masses.
One of the chief tasks that pre-dated the struggle was to unite the Indians who by the end of 18th century were divided in every possible way like caste, class, community, religion, sects etc. Though some movements were initiated by others, the complete unification of the backward classes to the struggle was achieved by Ambedkar. He was able to imbibe the modern western ideas like Rule of Law, Equality before law onto the Indian classes. Here, due respect should also be given to Lord Macaulay  for introduction of these ideas in British administration in India. He spread the ideas of Unity and Equality through his Journals Mukhnayak and Bahishkrita Bharatha. He organised the famous Mahar satyagraha demanding temple entry and usage of common civil amenities for the depressed classes. He was a brilliant orator and thoroughly impressed British P.M. Ramsay McDonald seeking for separate communal electorates for the Backward classes. We need to understand that we were liberated by the British rule and not from the problems that existed then. He was also part of the very few individuals who strived for an egalitarian society to fight the evils in the society along with the fight against the British. The constitution that he gave us is the single most greatest task in Indian history. It stands as a written document of the aspirations and thoughts of the freedom movement. We tend to undermine his efforts in this regard! Take the example of a small country like Nepal- They started the process of framing a constitution in 2008 and could get the consent of the people only by 2015. Catering to the needs, thoughts, beliefs , rights of a country as huge as ours is a herculean task.
Unfortunately, the communist regime later gave this social equality the colour of economic equality and divided them. Indeed, history has been very unkind to the memory of this great man.
Dr Ambedkar was a great visionary and the most scholar leader of all in India.
He was invloved in the struggle against the ancient system of casteism in India and fought for the untouchable's right for equality.
He was the main architect in constructing the Indian Constitution. Sadly most people has neglected this great national hero and consider him as a leader who fought only for Dalits.
During the freedom struggle he had already started his fight against casteism and was the only leader then who started this fight.
British ruled only for 150 years but his fight was against 2000 to 3000 years long casteism that ruled India. And belonging to a lower caste himself he overcame all his hurdles and cam
