It is generally said that, "What Bengal thinks today, India will think the same tomorrow". This is mainly due to the fact the Bengal single handedly spearheaded the  Independence struggle. Mainly because of the fact the Calcutta was the Imperial capital till it was shifted in 1911 to Delhi, English education in Bengal, Spiritual enlightenment etc.
But coming to contributions.

1. Womesh Chandra Banerjee : The first president of Indian National Congress, itself shows how Bengal province was important.

2. Swami Vivekananda : Intermingled the Religion and Nationalism which had huge impact on India as a whole.

3. Swadeshi Movement : In 1905, when Bengal was partitioned by Lord Curzon, Bengal reacted with huge vigour. This is one reason which led to the rise of the extremist groups within Congress, and hence speeding the Nationalism in India. Infact people never kept relations with relatives who used Manchester cotton or liverpool salts.

4. Indigo Revolts in Bengal is much older than Champaran itself. Put Britishers in place.

5. Student movements in Calcutta in early 1900s.

6. Surya Sen and Chittagong armory raid was an inspiration to lots of Indians.

7. Subhash Chandra Bose : The fire brand politician who could defeat Pattabhi Sitaramayya (Gandhi's candidate) in 1939 Congress's election. Founded All India Forward bloc and headed Azad Hind Fauj.
