Bimbisara was a very efficient politician. He had a clear idea of the political situation that existed during his time. He achieved success by establishing a number of matrimonial alliances. He is referred to as Shrenik in the Jain texts. He was one of the first kings to have a large standing army. He became a king when he was 15 years old. Besides expanding the empire he also patronized Buddhism and Jainism which were the two rising religions of the time. He had an efficient administrative machinery, in which the Rajbhats or Mahamattas who were the Royal officers were divided into many classes.
