Kanhoji Angre was the 1st chief of the Maratha navy. He was famously known as ' Samudralata Shivaji ' by the Marathas. He protected the western coasts in the Arabian sea region which were under the threat of foreign invaders. He became an obstacle to the East India company plans of expanding its empire in India.

Kanhoji Angre was the undefeated Maratha Naval Chief during the 18th century. He was appointed the admiral, by the Chief of Satara in 1698. Under his leadership, the Maratha army attacked and harassed the British, Dutch and Portuguese navies.
When the Marathas became weak, Angre took upon himself the task of attacking foreign navies in Indian waters. He was so famous that the Dutch and Jamaicans came to work on his ships.
