The system of "Subsidiary Alliance" introduced by Lord Wellesley proved to be a game changer for the British. According to this, the ruler of the Indian state had to compulsorily accept the permanent stationing of a British force within his territory.  

Following this, the ruler had to pay for the maintenance of the force.Moreover,he had to agree to the posting of a British resident at his court. Signing of a Subsidiary Alliance virtually led to the signing away of the independence of the state. All the rights to self defence, of maintaining diplomatic relations, of settling foreign disputes were lost to the British resident.  

The economy of the state suffered majorly and led to a grim state of affairs. Malgovernance became rampant.  

The British profited immensely from this system. At the cost of Indian states, they could maintain a large army which helped them fight wars far away from their own territories. The very power to overthrow a ruler and annex his state on the pretext of inefficiency was in their hands.  

In this manner, the states of Hyderabad, Awadh, Mysore etc were taken over
