The earliest nineteenth century missionary interest in the Northeast was shown by the Baptists of Serampore from 1816-1837. In 1811 an Assamese pundit, Atmaram Sarma of Kaliabari in the Nagaon district was employed by the mission to translate the Christian scriptures into Assamese and an Assamese New Testament was published in 1819.
