According to historian Ambeth Ocampo, Rizal's works in Dapitan always reflected his being a teacher. He improved the town plaza, providing it with gas lights and a relief map of Mindanao that he made with his favorite teacher, Father Francisco de Paula Sanchez. He dabbled in engineering as well.
