Sardar Patel was our national hero a great freedom fighter who played a tremendous role in making India Independent along with Mahatama Gandhi and Pundit Nehru.

He did not live too long after Indian independence in 1947, Sardar Patel passed away on 15, Dec 1950. So he lived only three years after independence. He was first deputy Prime Minister and first home minister of independent India. In short period of three years he accomplished the work of unification of India, he unified hundreds of princely states by convincing or coercing to join India. Most of the princely states were eager to join India some were convinced to join for some force was used. He used excessive force in Hyderabad in Police action which was highly criticize by Mahatma Gandhi. Sardar Patel’s tremendous accomplishment is considered to be his unification of more than five hundred princely states within India, to be part of Indian dominion.

Since he was also the home Minister of India and after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi he was highly criticized because of security lapses in Gandhi’s security. For which Sardar Patel was criticized heavily, some people in parliament even asked for his resignation. Some accused him of deliberately taking Gandhi’s security lightly.

In the book freedom at midnight written by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre, a whole chapter is devoted to Gandhi’s assassination. It says that in spite of many threats on Gandhi’s life by Hindu hardliners, and previous attempts on his life, Gandhi’s security was not taken seriously by India.

When fact of the matter is, Sardar Patel was old and survived only three years after independence, he died in the year 1950. So this question does not have enough merit unless some political parties of present who were non existent at the time want to hijack Sardar Patels legacy. Nehru lived till 1964 and strengthened the roots of democracy in India.
