Actually when electricity was invented , people knew that there were two types of charges that is positive and negative charges.But the sub atomic particle electron wasn't known at that time.
So people considered that electric current was flow of positive charges not negative charges.
And the flow of positive changes was taken as the direction of electric current.
Hence, the conventional direction of electric current is from positive terminal of the battery to negative terminal.
