This is about elephants…and me. I don’t just admire them, or respect them. I have a connection with them. A connection that started years ago…
There is a lot to say and tell about elephants. And I can give you loads of facts and scientific jargon, but this post is not about the science of elephants. It’s about the feelings they instill in us. It’s about a particular conversation with an elephant…
Elephants are probably the most feared and admired of all African land mammals, all at the same time. We yearn to be close to them, our eyes scanning the bush for them and our sense of hearing wide awake for the slightest sound of their trumpeting. But when we find them, when they step into our comfort zone, we freeze, shuddering at their immense size. We fear their presence.
In essence they are “Gentle Giants” in every sense of the word, just seeking their own little place in the sun. It’s once we engage with these amazing animals that we realise how uniquely similar they are to us…
I turned onto a small two track road. The sun just peeked over the horizon and shone directly into my eyes. I held my one hand in front of my face to see better. And then there he was. Like a Grey Ghost he appeared from nowhere. A big bull, in his forties and in the prime of his life. His huge tusks shimmered in the morning sun, and as he approached I could literally hear my guests holding their breaths.
