Being a Bengali is a matter of great pride. Not because of our rich and varied food tastes but because of our rich and diverse culture — the Bengali culture. During the late 1880s many writers enriched the Bengali culture at a time where "Knowledge is free'' and ''the head is held high''.
Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore was one such writer. A columnist, editor, writer, dramatist, novelist and a painter, a true genius, he was born on May 7, 1861 in Kolkata's Jorasanko Thakurbari in a Pirali Brahmin family. This day marked the birth of a great genius in the history of mankind.
Stratford Day School celebrated the birth anniversary of Gurudev last week. The programme started with our school principal, Abhijit Ray paying his respects by garlanding Gurudev's portrait. The ceremony become even more auspicious when the diya was lit.
The sheer dedication of little children of pre primary section made it a grand celebration. Watching Sourin Ghosh of standard III reciting the Bengali poem'' Master Babu'' was just wonderful. This was followed by the recitation of class II student Aranya Dutta with a splendid vocal power. She recited one of Gurudev's poem "Lukochuri",  a very nostalgic poem of our childhood. Her friend, Alankrita Dutta also recited ''Dustu'' with a rich spice of childhood's naughtiness. Soubarna Roy of class III startled us with an English poem ''Freedom''
Now came the turn of the middle school student, Mritunjoy Bhattacharya of class VII who recited "'Ponchise Boishak''. A dance performance by the senior school students was really mesmerizing which was also choreographed by them. Students sang “Aadheko ghume noyono chume'' in chorus while the teachers also took active part by singing ''Aami chini go chini''.
The stage decoration was done by the students who had collected gulmohor and rongon flowers from the school garden and by using old newspapers. The latter was done by Sasmit Baidik of class IX A and Sajal Biwas of class IX B. The entire programme was conducted by Souvik Ghosh and Srinjoy Paul of class IX B.
The programme concluded with a Bengali speech by our Bengali sir who also recited the poem ''Sei chheleta''.  The whole programme was a wonderful experience for all of us.
