By Dow's process first convert chlorobenzene to phenol and then simply do nitration (HNO3 + H2SO4) and it will yield picric acid due to the presence of very highly activating OH group.

  1. First, the Chloro Benzene reacts with Nitric acid and Sulphuric acid which gives 2,4 Dinitrochlorobenzene.
  2. 2,4 Dinitrochlorobenzene is reacted with Sodium Carbonate solution which gives 2,4 Dinitrophenol.
  3. Finally, 2,4 Dinitrophenol will react with Nitric acid and Sulphuric acid which on reacting will give Picric acid.
