By Dow's process first convert chlorobenzene to phenol and then simply do nitration (HNO3 + H2SO4) and it will yield picric acid due to the presence of very highly activating OH group.

- First, the Chloro Benzene reacts with Nitric acid and Sulphuric acid which gives 2,4 Dinitrochlorobenzene.
- 2,4 Dinitrochlorobenzene is reacted with Sodium Carbonate solution which gives 2,4 Dinitrophenol.
- Finally, 2,4 Dinitrophenol will react with Nitric acid and Sulphuric acid which on reacting will give Picric acid.
