Method 1

Reaction of acetic acid with NaN3 to give out methylamine (Schmidt reaction)

Reaction of methylamine with HNO2 to give out Methanol

Oxidation of methanol via KCr2O7 (H+) to give Formic acid

Method 2

Reaction of Acetic Acid with Soda Lime to give Methane

Reaction of methane with Cl2 in presence of sunlight to give ChloroMethane

Reaction of Chloromethan with KOH (aq) to give Methanol

Oxidation of methanol like K2Cr2O7 will yield Formic Acid

Method 3

Reaction of Acetic Acid with SOCl2 to give CH3CO-Cl

Reaction of CH3CO-Cl with Zn-Hg (Clemmenson Reduction ) to give CH3-CH2-Cl

Reaction of CH3-CH2-Cl with alc KOH to give CH2==CH2

Ozonolysis of CH2==CH2 to give HCHO

Reaction of HCHO with K2Cr2O7(H+) to give HCOOH

How is acetic acid converted to formic acid

Solve -

Acetic acid on reaction with PCl5 gives acetyl chloride.

CH3COOH + PCl5 →CH3COCl + POCl3 + HCl

Acetyl chloride on reduction with zinc amalgam in presence of HCl gives chloroethane.

CH3COCl (Zn/Hg, HCl) → CH3CH2Cl

Chloroethane on treating with alcoholic KOH gives ethene.

CH3CH2Cl (alc. KOH) → CH2=CH2

Ethene on oxidation with alk. KMnO4 gives formic acid.

CH2=CH2 (alk. KMnO4) → 2HCOOH
