Explanation:

For the conversion of benzene to biphenyl, we will follow two steps:

Step 1: Converting benzene to chlorobenzene

For, this, we add chlorine in the presence of aluminium chloride. This reaction is an electrophilic substitution reaction.

Step 2: Converting chlorobenze to diphenyl

Taking 2 moles of chlorobenzene formed and reacting it with sodium metal in the presence of dry ether results in the formation of diphenyl. This reaction is known as Fittig reaction.
