Conversion of Ethanol to ethanoic acid is an oxidation reaction. This can be illustrated as follows:

1. An oxidation reaction is characterized by the loss of a H atom or the gain of an O atom, or both.

2. Or, the loss an electon signifies an oxidation reaction.

3. In the conversion of ethanol to ethanoic acid, a C atom loses two singly bonded H atoms and forms a double bond with O atom.

4. The reaction is depicted in the figure below.

5. Here KMnO4 or K2Cr2O7 act as oxidising agents.
