Conversion of ethanol to ethyl chloride:

  • Ethyl chloride can also be known as chloroethane. It is a flammable, colourless gas that belongs to the family of organohalogen compounds.  
  • Nowadays, it is mainly used in the production of certain organic chemicals. It is prepared from ethylene by reacting it with HCl in the presence of catalyst named as aluminum chloride.  
  • This ethyl chloride would then involved boiling process at the \bold{12.3^{\circ} \mathrm{C}} and then it got freeze at \bold{-138.7^{\circ} \mathrm{C}}. It can then be freely dissolved in ether, alcohol and so on.
