The conversion of ethanol to chloroethane can be done with the help of Lucas reagent. Lucas reagent is the mixture of \bold{\mathrm{HCl} \text { with } \mathrm{ZnCl}_{2}}.

Here \mathrm{ZnCl}_{2} acts as dehydrating agent and HCl involves in the substitution reaction of –OH with –Cl.

The reaction can be written as:

\mathrm{CH}_{3}-\mathrm{CH}_{2}-\mathrm{OH}+\mathrm{HCl} / \mathrm{ZnCl}_{2} \rightarrow \mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{CH}_{2}-\mathrm{Cl}+\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}

\mathrm{ZnCl}_{2} acts as dehydrating agent so remove water which is formed as the side product and that continues the reaction in the forward direction.
