  Given: 1.0 mg/cm^{2}

  To Find: Conversion product of given figure in units of kg/m^{2}

Solution :

  • To convert 1.0 mg/cm^{2} to kg/m^{2} we will convert first numerator unit the denominator unit one-by-one.

  1. As we know         1 kg = 1000 g

                       and         1 g = 1000 mg

     ∴ We can infer that 1 kg = 1000 × 1000 mg

                                  ⇒ 1 mg = \frac{1}{1000000} kg or 10^{-6} kg          (a)

     2.  As we know 1 m = 100 cm

                        and 1 m^{2} = 1 m × 1 m

                Similarly 1 cm^{2} = 1 cm × 1 cm

                           ∴  1 m^{2} = 100 cm × 100 cm

                           ⇒ 1 m^{2} = 10000 cm^{2}

                           ⇒ 1 cm^{2} = \frac{1}{10000} m^{2} or 10^{-4}

   3. Hence from (a) and (b) we get:

                                 1.0 mg/cm^{2} = 1.0 × \frac{10^{-6} }{10^{-4} } kg/m^{2}

                              ⇒ 1.0 mg/ cm^{2} =  1.0 × 10^{-6} kg × 10^{4} m^{-2}      (10^{-(-4)} =

                              ⇒ 1.0 mg/cm^{2} = 1.0 × 10^{-2}    kg/ m^{2}               ( 10^{-6 + 4} = 10^{-2})

Therefore, 1.0 mg/cm^{2} = 10^{-2} kg/ m^{2} or \frac{1}{100} kg/m^{2}
