Answer:

How do we perform the isomerisation of 1-butyne to 2-butyne using NaNH2? As a first step, I think that NH2− would remove H+ from the third carbon to give an allene intermediate. But I don't know how to proceed after that. Please explain the other steps.

1 - Butyne ( CH_{3} −CH_{2}−C≡CH ) can be converted into 2 - Butyne ( CH_{3} −C≡C−CH_{3}   ) by following step of reaction -

React 1 - Butyne ( CH_{3} −CH_{2}−C≡CH ) with ethanolic potassium hydroxide ( KOH ) , 2 - Butyne ( CH_{3} −C≡C−CH_{3}   ) is formed .

The chemical reaction is as follows -

CH_{3} −CH_{2}−C≡CH  + ethanolic KOH  →  CH_{3} −C≡C−CH_{3}

  • At standard temperature and pressure , 2 - Butyne is a volatile , colorless and pungent liquid .
  • The molar mass of 2 - Butyne is 54.0904 g / mol .
