Acetylene when treated with sulphuric acid in presence of Hg first forms a vinyl alcohol which then tautomerises to acetaldehyde. The acetaldehyde is then oxidised to get acetic acid. In this reaction NaOH first converts acetic acid to its salt and then CaO decarboxylates it to directly give methane.
