  • The carbonyl oxygen of acid chloride forms complex with AlCl3. Acylium ion is formed which is a strong electrophile.
  • Acylium ion attacks benzene ring to form arenium ion.
  • The arenium ion undergoes loss of proton and removal of HCl.
  • The resultant product from by these three steps will be benzophenone.
