Benzene can be converted into benzoic acid as follows. Benzene on treatment with CO and HCl in presence of anhydrous AlCl₃,formylation takes place to give benzaldehyde. Step-2:—Conversion of benzaldehyde into benzoic acid. Benzaldehyde is oxidised by acidified KMnO₄ to form benzoic acid.
