Benzoic acid can be converted to benzene by the sodalime reaction.

C₆H₅COOH + 2NaOH → C₆H₅ + Na₂CO₃

When benzoic acid (C₆H₅COOH) is reacted with Sodalime solution (NaOH in Ca(OH)₂), decarboxylation reaction takes place with the removal of Na₂CO₃ and thereby forming the required benzene molecule.

For any alkyl group, R, the reaction takes place as:

RCOOH + 2NaOH → RH + Na₂CO₃

For phenyl group as R, the acid would be benzoic acid. So,

C₆H₅COOH + 2NaOH → C₆H₅ + Na₂CO₃
