# synthesis of phenyacetic acid from benzoic acid:

Benzoic acid will react with thionyl chloride(SOCl2) to give benzoyl chloride. Then Benzoyl chloride will react with diazomethane to give diazoketone. In the presence of Water and a Metal catalyst(silver oxide), it will give phenylacetic acid as a desired product. The Arndt-Eistert reaction is used to convert the benzoic acid to phenylacetic acid.
