Benzene can be converted into benzoic acid as follows;
Step 1: Conversion of benzene into benzaldehyde.
Benzene on treatment with CO and HCL in presence of anhydrous
AlCl3, formylation takes place to give benzaldehyde.
Step 2: Convertion of benzaldehyde into benzoic acid.
Benzaldehyde is oxidised by acidified KMNO4 to form benzoic acid.

Dear friend,
Synthesis of phenylacetic acid from Benzoic acid:
Benzoic acid can react with thionyl chloride(SOCl2) to give Benzoyl chloride. Then Benzoyl chloride can react with diazomethane to offer diazo ketone. Within the presence of Water and a Metal catalyst(silver oxide), it will give phenylacetic acid as a desired product. The Arndt-Eistert reaction is employed to convert the Benzoic acid to phenylacetic acid.
