Butan-1-ol ( CH$_{3}$CH$_{2}$CH$_{2}$CH$_{2}$OH )can be converted into butanoic acid ( CH$_{3}$CH$_{2}$CH$_{2}$COOH ) by following step of reaction -

React butan-1-ol with chromium trioxide ( CrO$_{3}$ ) in the presence of sulphuric acid ( H$_{2}$SO$_{4}$ ) , butanoic acid is formed .

  CH$_{3}$CH$_{2}$CH$_{2}$CH$_{2}$OH + CrO$_{3}$ + H$_{2}$SO$_{4}$ →  CH$_{3}$CH$_{2}$CH$_{2}$COOH

• CrO$_{3}$ + H$_{2}$SO$_{4}$ is known as Jones reagent .
• Butanoic acid is used to form cellulose acetate butyrate .
