Butan-1-ol ( CH_{3}CH_{2}CH_{2}CH_{2}OH )can be converted into butanoic acid ( CH_{3}CH_{2}CH_{2}COOH ) by following step of reaction -

React butan-1-ol with chromium trioxide ( CrO_{3} ) in the presence of sulphuric acid ( H_{2}SO_{4} ) , butanoic acid is formed .

  CH_{3}CH_{2}CH_{2}CH_{2}OH + CrO_{3} + H_{2}SO_{4} →  CH_{3}CH_{2}CH_{2}COOH

  • CrO_{3} + H_{2}SO_{4} is known as Jones reagent .
  • Butanoic acid is used to form cellulose acetate butyrate .
