Answer:

Hell-Volhard Zelinsky or HVZ reaction can be used to convert to Butanoic acid to 2-Bromo butanoic acid.

Explanation:

  • In the presence of small amount of red phosphorous temperature above 373K, the alpha hydrogen atoms of alkyl group of aliphatic acids can be replaced by bromine to form Haloacid. This reaction is known as HVZ reaction.
  • To convert Butanoic acid into 2-Bromo butanoic acid:-

        CH₃CH₂CH₂COOH    \underrightarrow{Br_2/P}   CH₃CH₂CH(Br)COOH    +  HBr

         Butanoic acid                          2-Bromo Butanoic acid

  1. When the oxygen of carboxylic acid attacks the phosphorous, the hydroxide removed as a good leaving group and formed a tetrahedral intermediate.
  2. The hydrogen bromide gives a proton to the carbonyl oxygen. The resulting bromide ion captures the hydrogen from alpha position and then the keto-enol tautomerization of the carboxylic acid takes place.
  3. The oxygen in the enol forms a double bond with the carbon. The existing carbon-carbon double bond accept bromine atom lead to bromination of the enol at the alpha carbon.
  4. Then again addition of water, the acyl bromide formed in last step is hydrolyzed into the carboxylic acid.
