React it with NaOH and then CaO and NaOH(decarboxylation) will give
CH3CH3  then react it with dehydrogenate with KOH or K2O will give ethene
then Br2 will give CH3CH2Br

To convert CHCHCOOH to CHCHBr following step takes place-

STEP 1: CONVERSION OF PROPANOIC ACID TO PROPANAMIDE

  • Propanoic acid when reacted with an excess of ammonia gives propanamide.

The reaction is given by-

CHCHCOOH + NH ----------> CHCHCONH

STEP 2: REACTION OF PROPANAMIDE WITH AN AQUEOUS SOLUTION OF BROMINE.

  • Propanamide, when treated with aqueous solution of bromine or ethanol, is the solution of sodium hydroxide that degrades to form ethyl amine (primary amine).

The reaction is given by -

CHCHCONH -------> CHCHNH

CHCHCONH-------> CHCHNH (in presence of Br/NaOH)

STEP 3: CONVERSION OF ETHYL AMINE TO ETHYL ALCOHOL.

  • Ethylamine reacts with a nitrous acid which is obtained from an aqueous solution of NaNO₂ and dilute HCL to form ethyl diazonium chloride at a temperature of 5°c
  • Ethyldiazonium chloride on heating gives ethanol and chloride gas.

The reaction is given by -

CHCHNH+HNO--->CHClNO

CHCHNH+HNO------------->CHClNO

CHClNO+ heat --------> CHCHOH + Cl

STEP 4: REACTION OF ETHYL ALCOHOL WITH PHOSPHORUS TRIBROMIDE.

  • Ethyl alcohol reacts with phosphorus tribromide to give ethyl bromide and phosphorus acid.

The reaction is given by-

CHCHOH + Pbr -----------> CHCHBr + HPO
