It is converted as follows:

CH4 is also called methane ( or marsh gas or methyl hydride. It is an easily ignited colorless odorless gas.

CH3CH2COOH is also called ethanol which is also a colorless flammable compound and it is an alcohol, a group containing a hydroxyl group bonded to a carbon atom.

Methane is converted to ethanol in the following steps:

  1. Methane is taken as excess and Br2 is added in diffused sunlight
  2. Dry ether is then added
  3. It is then added along with formaldehyde and then acidic hydrolysis of the alkoxide ion occurs with added dilute HCl.
  4. Add PBr3 and the primary alcohol is heated.
  5. The alkyl halide obtained is gone through acidic hydrolysis and CH3CH2COOH is obtained.
  1. CH4 + Br2 ⇒ CH3Br + HBr
  2. CH3Br + Mg (dry ether)  ⇒ CH3MgBr
  3. CH3MgBr + (i) HCHO ii) HCl  ⇒ CH3CH2OH + MgBrCl
  4. CH3CH2OH + KBr/H2SO4  ⇒ CH3CH2Br + KHSO4 +H2O
  5. CH3CH2Br + (KCN)/HCN  ⇒ CH3CH2CN + HBr
  6. CH3CH2CN + HCl + 2H2O  ⇒ CH3CH2COOH + NH4Cl
