It is converted as follows:
CH4 is also called methane ( or marsh gas or methyl hydride. It is an easily ignited colorless odorless gas.
CH3CH2COOH is also called ethanol which is also a colorless flammable compound and it is an alcohol, a group containing a hydroxyl group bonded to a carbon atom.
Methane is converted to ethanol in the following steps:
- Methane is taken as excess and Br2 is added in diffused sunlight
- Dry ether is then added
- It is then added along with formaldehyde and then acidic hydrolysis of the alkoxide ion occurs with added dilute HCl.
- Add PBr3 and the primary alcohol is heated.
- The alkyl halide obtained is gone through acidic hydrolysis and CH3CH2COOH is obtained.
- CH4 + Br2 ⇒ CH3Br + HBr
- CH3Br + Mg (dry ether) ⇒ CH3MgBr
- CH3MgBr + (i) HCHO ii) HCl ⇒ CH3CH2OH + MgBrCl
- CH3CH2OH + KBr/H2SO4 ⇒ CH3CH2Br + KHSO4 +H2O
- CH3CH2Br + (KCN)/HCN ⇒ CH3CH2CN + HBr
- CH3CH2CN + HCl + 2H2O ⇒ CH3CH2COOH + NH4Cl
