The mechanism of the reaction involves the following three step:

Step 1: Proptonation of ethene to form carbocation by electrophilic attack of H3O+.

Step 2: Nucleophilic attack of water on carbocation.

Step 3: Deprotonation to form an ethanol.

Ethanol can be converted to ethene by dehydration of ethanol. In dehydration an ethanol is heating at high temperature in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid. The phosphoric acid can also be used instead of sulphuric acid. Mechanism of the reaction is, the mechanism of the acid dehydration has three steps.
