Conversion of Ethyl chloride to Ethene:
To convert ethyl chloride to ethene, it is reacted with alcoholic Potassium Hydroxide. This leads to the elimination of the chloride present in the beta position to form ethene. This produces hydrochloric acid as a by-product.
Ethane is used to manufacture ethylene. It is also used in the food industry to ripen fruits and also acts as a refrigerant. Uses of ethyl chloride are to relieve pain from injuries by deep muscle relaxation. It is used extensively in sports as an instant spray.
