√40 can be rewritten as √1*40, √2*20, etc., etc. That being said, you are supposed to simplify the radical, and do so by finding the square root of one of the perfect square factors of the radical. 4 is a perfect square and is a factor of 40. So, you could rewrite √40 as √4*10, or √4*√10.
