Treating Methyl bromide (CH₃Br) in the presence of a strong cyanide salt, usually alcoholic Potassium cyanide (KCN) yields Methyl cyanide (CH₃CN).

When this Methyl cyanide (CH₃CN) is subjected to complete acid hydrolysis i.e., distilled water in the presence of any mineral acid, CH₃CN gets hydrolyzed to give Acetic acid with the evolution of ammonia gas.

CH₃Br +KCN → CH₃CN + KBr

CH₃CN (H₃O⁺) → CH₃COOH + NH₃
