Convert phenol into benzaldehyde?

Treat phenol with zinc dust to obtain benzene. Use friedel crafts alkylation method to add a methyl group to the ring. Oxidise the methyl group with chromyl chloride (Etard reaction) to get the required benzaldehyde.
