Explanation:

How to convert propanoic acid to acetic acid

Add LiAlH4 / ether to carboxylic acid. ...

Next add concentrated sulfuric acid (H2SO4) to propanol and heat the mixture. ...

Now, Br2 / CCl 4 reacts with propene (an alkene) to give CH3CHBrCH2Br (alkyl halide).

CH3CHBrCH2Br. is heated with alcoholic KOH to prepare CH3CCH (alkyne).

Answer:

First add Na to propionic acid:

CH3CH2COOH + NaOH = CH3CH2COONa + H2O

Now add NaOH again in presence of CAO to CH3CH2COONa .

CH3CH2COONA + NaOH( CaO ) = C2H6 + Na2CO3

Now oxidise the C2H6 with K2Cr207.

C2H6 + K2Cr207 = CH3COOH.
