Propyne reacts with bromine(Br₂), and formation of 1,2-dibromopropene takes places that reacts with hydrogen to form 1,2-dibromopropane that reacts with hydrazine to form 1-bromopropene that undergoes corey house synthesis to form but-2-yne. The reaction scheme is shown in the image attached.

The above transformation can be achieved by the following set of reactions:

  • Firstly,propyne is to be heated with sodium in dry ether to form sodium propenyde . this reaction takes place because the hydrogen attached to the triple bonded carbon atom possess some acidic character.
  • Nextly, Sodium propenyde is treated with chloromethane , in which the propenyde ion acts as a nucleophile and substitutes the chloride ion producing but-2-yne.
  • But-2-yne can be converted into but-1-yne by simply treating it with sodium amide (NaNH2) followed by hydrolysis.
