Indirect Speech/Reported Speech refers to speech being said to a third person/reporting what happened to a third person.

Example: Deborah said,"I brought cake today." (Direct)

Deborah said that she brought cake that day. (Indirect)

In the above example, when writing in reported/indirect form, the sentence changes according to its tense form. Also, modifications regarding certain words like 'you' changes to 'I', 'will' changes to 'would', 'tomorrow changes to 'the next day' and many other words will have to be made.

(a) how he was getting on with his studies.

(b) that he was doing fine.

(c) he had stood third in play modeling.

(d) how many students were there

Hope it helps :)
