Answer:

The pretty woman exclaimed with surprise that it was so unbelievable.

Explanation:

  • When quoting the actual words said by the speaker in a sentence using inverted commas, we call it the direct speech.
  • When reporting the words said by the speaker in a sentence without using inverted commas, we call it the indirect speech.

To convert a sentence from direct speech to indirect speech, these rules have to be followed:-

✪ The inverted commas have to be removed.

✪ Words in the statement have to be changed into their indirect form:-

  • this - that
  • these - those
  • here - there
  • now - then
  • today - that day
  • tonight - that night
  • yesterday - the previous day
  • tomorrow - the next day

The statement is to be changed to its corresponding past tense unless the statement has a fact, or the reporting verb is in the present tense.

✪ If the statement being quoted is exclamatory, the exclamatory phrase is to be removed and the reporting verb is to be replaced by 'exclaimed with surprise/joy/regret/relief etc.'.
