Question :
Change into indirect speech
Heaven! He cried, "I will never steal again."
Answer :
He exclaimed with regret that he would never steal again.
The rules to change a direct speech into an indirect speech are as follows :
- The comma and the double quotations are omitted.
- The tense of the sentence inside the quotation does not change if the reported verb is in present tense.
- The tense of the sentence inside the quotation changes accordingly if the reported verb is in past tense.
- Here , the reported verb is in simple past tense, therefore the tense of the sentence inside quotation changes from simple future tense to simple past tense.
- 'Cried' becomes 'exclaimed' since it is an exclamatory sentence.
- 'I' becomes 'he'.
- 'Will' becomes 'would'.
