                                              Coping with loss

The value of coping with loss is beautifully taught in the chapter, A Dog Named Duke. It is about a man named, Hooper who shows us how our losses can be coped. Though outer factors such as a cooperative and supportive wife, extraordinarily faithful dog, and his company help him a lot, yet his inner strength and endurance are quite commendable.

Charles Hooper's grit is quite laudable. The brain injury took a heavy toll, rendering him paralytic. He remained on the critical list for a month. He was brought home, but not much improvement happened. Hooper exhibited unmatched patience, determination and visualization to get back to normal life. When he was offered with the slightest opportunity in the form of Duke's prodding and pulling, he grabbed it. He made his hundred percent effort in walking. On January 4 he managed to walk 200 meters from clinic to his branch office and expressed wish to start working. Then he set March 1 as a deadline to start working full day. Hooper was a strong man who set goals and tried his best to achieve them. Only strong, determined and dedicated men have this quality.

By the dint of his courage, strength, and endurance, not only did he survive the brain injury that left him paralytic, he also used the same strength to overcome his disabilities. As the saying goes, God helps those who help themselves, Hopper successfully dealt with his loss and overcame it. At the end, he also had to cope with the loss of Duke, who died in a car accident.

A Dog Named Duke is an encounter of how Charles Chuck Hooper coped with the loss of his beloved dog called Duke. Once Hooper met with a grave accident and the doberman pinscher dog was sent back to the kennel from where he was adopted. Soon, the wheelchair bound Hooper began to walk with help from his wife Marcy and Duke.

One fateful day, Duke was hit by a car and efforts to save him were futile. Meanwhile Hooper got promoted at his work place and he credited his success to Duke.

By firmly believing that Duke was with him at each step of what he did, Cooper was able to bear the loss of his dog and move on in life.
