It is so because they have very low resistance. So while transmission over long distances, electricity is not dissipated in form of heat and energy is, hence, not wasted.
Actually aluminium is more preferential than copper as such it is lighter

Copper and alluminium are good conductors of electricity and heat. Copper is more conducting and preferrable than alluminium. In electric wires, we notice copper wires inside. They are used for providing electricity.
