copper doesn't burn in oxygen because it will react slowly with oxygen and according to metal reactive series it is less reactive and sodium is most reactive .Heated copper metal reacts with oxygen to form the black copper oxide. The copper oxide can then react with the hydrogen gas to form the copper metal and water. When the funnel is removed from the hydrogen stream, the copper was still be warm enough to be oxidized by the air again.

So when heated Cu is exposed to the atmosphere, it combines with atmospheric O2, forming CuO which as you said is black in colour. Copper metal when exposed to hearing in air, oxygen reacts with copper surface forming thin layer of copper oxide over it. This cupric oxide is already burnt and can't go reaction further.
