This happens because of corrosion of copper ...
green coating is basic copper carbonate ...cu(oh)2.cuco3

The greenish substance or layer that appears on the copper surface if basically the corrosion of the metal due to its proximity to carbon dioxide.
It first reacts with Oxygen in the air to create Copper Oxide (CuO).
Later on, this Copper Oxide (CuO) further reacts with carbon dioxide and forms copper carbonate (CuCO3) that is the exhibited as the greenish deposition on the surface of copper.
The chemical equations for the same are as follows.
2Cu + O2 ―> 2CuO. CuO + CO2 ―> CuCO3.
