There was no aluminium, plastic or steel, so utensils were made of copper and brass. Copper is also used in rituals for its purity. For cooking in copper or brass vessels, they have to be coated with tin.

Copper vessels are coated with tin to prevent corrosion.

Tinning is a method in which metal is coated with molten tin. Copper vessels, articles get coated with green coloured layer when kept exposed to air for long time due to corrosion. This can be prevented by coating these articles with thin layer of tin.
