Copper when exposed to moisture forms Copper Carbonate (Basic) CuSO_4. Cu(OH)_2 (green)
Since it is basic in nature so it could be easily removed with help of slightly acidic substances like lemon or tamarind juice, which neutralizes it to regain the shine of pure copper
Even I didn't know it earlier, I got to know when a Copper jug came to my home.
