The order ‘Cordaitales’ include "extinct" gymnosperms.

They may be the early woody plants present in the Palaeozoic times.

The plants were tall (> 90 feet) with considerable girth (about 3 feet in diameter).

They branched only near the tops  which appeared like a crown.

Their leaves were large and simple which is in contrast to the typical needle or scale-like leaves of the gymnosperms now.
