Hello Friend
Corpus luteum is formed after the release of secondary oocytes from it.
Corpus luteum has long life in pregnancy because after the release of ovum it releases several hormones which are necessar throughout the pregnancy.
However if fertilisation does not take place no pregnancy occurs so it has no role to perform hence it degenerates.
