Explanation: the hormone LH is responsible for maintaining corpus luteum

if fertilization does not take place the corpus luteum degenerates in 8 to 10

days due to negative inhibition of LH by progesterone and estrogen .

if fertilization takes place the trophoblast relases a hormone HCG which

performs similar functions as LH . So this HCG is responsible for maintaining

corpus luteum for 1st 3 months of pregnency.
